Role Description
Job Description: Consultant – Protected Areas Management
The purpose of the role is to support major projects in emerging economies, integrating nature into business decision-making to deliver conservation gains and a sustainable basis for development.
Responsibilities
- Collation, interpretation and analysis of a wide range of environmental and social data
- Supporting clients to interpret, understand and apply financial lending criteria, e.g. IFC PS6
- Working as part of a project team, with responsibility for project elements
- Design and review of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) baseline surveys
- Design of actions that implement the mitigation hierarchy
- Design and implementation of natural resource / BES management strategies including mechanisms such as forest restoration and protected area management
- Design and application of appropriate metrics for BES loss/gain accounting
- Design of site-level Biodiversity Action Plans and Management Plans in a range of contexts, especially developments in non-OECD countries
- Facilitating industry engagement with protected areas and their management
- Convening and facilitating workshops bringing together multiple parties
- Managing and strengthening partnerships and relations with companies, NGOs, and government institutions in emerging markets / non-OECD
- Research and writing on technical and scientific aspects of biodiversity, ecosystem services and natural capital, for publication
- Writing and editing succinct reports, and delivering presentations
- Networking globally within the conservation movement
- Developing new business in line with TBC strategy and due diligence framework
- Other duties commensurate with the role
Attributes
Essential attributes
- Experience of working in Africa
- Three years or more experience in a relevant field, such as biodiversity conservation, protected area/natural resource management, a conservation planner; a natural resource manager;
- Field experience related to biodiversity, conservation and/or ecology.
- Broad desktop research skills and experience, including understanding a region’s conservation status in terms of habitat and biodiversity, impacts from industry and level of protection
- Proven ability to work on multiple projects
- Familiarity with international biodiversity, socio-economics, natural resource and livelihood issues,
- Experience in one of more of the following sectors: mining; oil and gas; renewable energy; infrastructure; forestry; agribusiness
- A willingness to travel and work with the private sector, understand their needs
- Positivity and teamwork
- A Masters’ degree or equivalent post-graduate studies in relevant disciplines
Desirable attributes
- Experience of managing conservation projects and with industry experience
- Experience of training/mentoring biodiversity/ecosystem service professionals in non-OECD contexts
- Demonstrated track record in project management
- Experience with IUCN red listing or species action plans, or experience with specific biodiversity survey and management methods;
- Familiarity with scientific publishing
- PhD in environmental or relevant social discipline
- GIS skills
- Significant field experience in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and/or Latin America
- Environmental (ecological) consultancy experience
