Natural Cambridgeshire - Developing a Future Fit for Nature
Natural Cambridgeshire, the Local Nature Partnership for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have launched their Natural Future Vision and Developing with Nature Toolkit at launch events in Cambridge and Peterborough - see https://naturalcambridgeshire.org.uk/news/
Natural Future highlights the importance of having a nature rich environment where we work, live and play. Nature gives us clean water, flood control, pollinators, leisure and recreation - our prosperity, health and wellbeing depend upon it! Although the area of rich wildlife habitat in our county is one of the lowest in England, the Vision illustrates some wonderful local wildlife sights to be seen locally. It also sets out a ten point plan which shows that by making the right choices we can greatly improve the environment and quality of life for local people, businesses and visitors.
The Developing with Nature Toolkit has been put together by a team of developers, ecological consultants and conservationists who work across Cambridgeshire and is designed to smooth the planning process. It is intended to help developers and infrastructure providers to demonstrate their commitment to achieving net biodiversity gain to the public, local authorities or shareholders. The Toolkit comprises a simple list of “10 Things to do for Nature” and is primarily intended for major developments requiring an Environmental Impact Assessment. Both Peterborough City and Huntingdonshire District Councils already reference the toolkit in their recommended planning documents.
Richard Astle, Chair of Natural Cambridgeshire and Managing Director of Athene Communications in Peterborough, said “A high quality natural environment is important to both people and wildlife. Our new Vision and Toolkit will not only help protect existing special places for nature but help us to work alongside Local Authorities and Developers to make sure there are more and better accessible green spaces for local residents and businesses for leisure and recreation”
