We are expanding the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme database with more European countries participating; facilitating partners to set up citizen science monitoring schemes in more countries. Coordinators are recruiting and training volunteers to carry out transect walks regularly and indentify and count butterflies and report results.

We are updating, with additional data, the EU grassland butterfly indicator, which is a good proxy for the state of grasslands on which other pollinators depend and is used in EU policy evaluation. We will be developing indicators for woodland, wetland and urban habitats and a climate change indicator. And we are developing an App for ease of recording in the field.

We are working with colleagues in Brussels to share lessons learned, encourage implementation of the EU Pollinators Initiative and advocate a more ecological reform of the CAP.

We are keen to find active volunteers all over the EU especially in Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Czech Republic in particular. So we would be delighted to hear of any contacts that CCF members might have in these and other EU countries, who are interested in citizen science, monitoring or insect recovery.
