Position: Research Assistant/ Associate: communication and disseminating Conservation Evidence

Salary: £26,243-£30,395 or £32,236-£39, 609

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for up to 12 months.


The Conservation Science Group of Zoology Department is looking for a researcher to work with Prof. William Sutherland and Dr Rebecca Smith on the Conservation Evidence project.The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting the use of scientific evidence summarised by Conservation Evidence in practice and policymaking (

You must have excellent writing skills and a strong interest in biodiversity. The successful candidate will work closely with the Conservation Evidence team in Cambridge. The project is funded by Arcadia.


Essential required skills

  • Relevant BSc, MSc or equivalent, to a good level in an appropriate subject (e.g. biological sciences/ecology/zoology).

  • Demonstrable success at communicating science in a range of formats, such as websites, newsletters, presentations and newspaper articles.

  • A strong understanding of strategic communications and marketing.

  • Ability to write clear, concise summaries of scientific information for a wide audience.

  • Detailed understanding of biodiversity conservation

  • Good general understanding of ecological statistics and experimental design

  • Fluent at writing and speaking in English.

  • Experience running meetings/workshops.

  • Demonstrable ability to complete projects to the stage of good quality outputs, on time.

  • Ability to travel to meetings in the UK and overseas.

  • Good team worker.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Planning and implementing a strategy for promoting the use of scientific evidence, as summarised by Conservation Evidence, in decision making for conservation practice and policymaking.

  • Communicating scientific evidence to a range of audiences using a variety of formats.

  • Designing promotional material and attending meetings and conferences.

  • Designing training material and running training workshops in the use of evidence.

  • Overseeing the development of the Conservation Evidence website from a user perspective.

  • Developing an approach to monitoring and evaluating the uptake of Conservation Evidence.
