We are looking for an experienced, qualified and proven leader to manage the ‘Healthy Ocean Theme’ of the Centre’s strategy. 

This role aims to catalyse greater impact and support the delivery of global ocean goals and targets by:

  • Playing an influential role in the application of effective ecosystem based management tools;
  • Leading to a step-change in global access to, and use of, ocean and coastal biodiversity information and spatial data;
  • Influencing the uptake of ocean literacy and citizen behaviour change strategies:
  • Leading cutting edge development activities across UNEP-WCMC based on impactful innovative ocean-focused ideas and partnerships.

As Principal Specialist in Marine Conservation and Management you will lead fundraising efforts and partnership building to support this priority area of work. The role is global in remit and requires engagement with the international ocean science-policy-society community.  Maintaining close and effective relationships with the Senior Management Team, you will participate in the Centre’s strategic planning and will lead the development of a portfolio of projects in line with this.

You will hold a postgraduate qualification (MSc or higher) in a relevant discipline, such as natural, biological, environmental or social sciences, and have demonstrated experience in working at the ocean science-policy-society interface at an international level. You will have experience of leading a high profile portfolio of research work, including strategic thinking, project management and delivering high quality outputs.  A strong track record in fundraising together with good organisational capacity, interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate a team towards a common objective are also essential.  We particularly welcome applicants with a strong background in ocean literacy and citizen behaviour change.
