Licensing Assistant, BTO Thetford

Application Deadline:
26 Apr 2017
Thetford, Norfolk
(19,232-21,369 + pension)

The British Trust for Ornithology is seeking applications for this full-time post in our Ringing and Nest Recording Team, based at our head office in Thetford. The long-running Ringing and Nest Record Schemes collect vital data on the survival, breeding success and movement of birds which allow us to understand the drivers of changes in abundance identified by our census surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey.

The post-holder will work with the Licensing & Sales Manager to ensure that volunteer ringers and nest recorders are able to operate in accordance with wildlife protection and animal welfare legislation. Routine tasks will include issue and renewal of ringing permits to our network of almost 3,000 bird ringers, issue of licences to monitor specially protected birds listed on Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981) at breeding sites, and involvement in the process for agreeing and reporting on the use of Special Methods, such as satellite tags.

The BTO’s licensing activities are undertaken on behalf of the statutory nature conservation agencies in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and will therefore involve regular liaison with agency staff. Providing effective support, direction and motivation to volunteers is key to the success of citizen science monitoring projects and establishing good relationships with survey participants in the field is also core to this role.

Candidates should display good administrative and organisational skills, including those relating to computing and data handling; rigour is essential given the legal implications of the processes being undertaken, as is good time management and the ability to work to deadlines. Effective communication with both professionals and amateurs is vital, displaying discretion and diplomacy in what can, at times, be a sensitive area of work. An appreciation of the Ringing and Nest Record Schemes’ contribution to conservation and the practicalities of fieldwork undertaken is also important; prior involvement as a volunteer in either scheme would be advantageous.

Closing date for receipt of applications is 1pm on Wednesday 26 April 2017. It is anticipated that interviews will be held in Thetford on Wednesday 10 May 2017.
