The Middle Level Commissioners are a statutory corporation responsible for flood risk management and navigation on the major watercourses within part of the fenland area of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. In addition, from their offices in March, their staff provides administrative and financial services to over 30 other local drainage authorities, which ensures a constant, varied and interesting workload.
The Commissioners’ present post holder is retiring after many years of successful delivery of conservation benefits to the area, and as a consequence a replacement is being sought.

Roles/ Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be required to provide the Middle Level Commissioners and associated IDBs with guidance on biodiversity and wildlife conservation (including related legislative requirements) and encourage a wider understanding and appreciation of the natural Fenland environment, raising awareness of the positive role that the drainage and water management bodies play.

Also to preserve and enhance the wildlife habitats, species, biodiversity and the environmental potential of the area covered, the Conservation Officer will work closely with the IDBs and the Operations Department, balancing conservation aims with the ongoing system maintenance and improvement needs of this highly productive and unique agricultural area.

The successful applicant should ideally be HND or Degree qualified in a conservation related subject and/or have appropriate field - based experience, spanning a significant period. Experience with conservation work in slow flowing artificial channels and/or the works of flood risk management bodies such as IDBs will be of advantage but is not essential.
The successful applicant must be capable of working independently, to strict deadlines, be computer literate and an efficient time manager who is able to communicate well with members of staff, both senior and junior, Board members, external organisations and the general public.
Applicants should hold a full driving licence.
Starting salary will be dependant on experience and qualifications and will be in the range of £23,304 - £30,924 per annum. A 4x4 vehicle will be supplied to assist you with delivery of your role and admission into a NEST pension scheme will be offered.
