Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is an international charity working to save species from extinction. Headquartered in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Durrell focuses on the most threatened species in the most threatened places.
Established by author and conservationist, Gerald Durrell, in 1963, Durrell delivers its conservation mission through our three integrated core areas of operation:
• Field Programmes: conservation action where it is needed most
• Conservation Knowledge: training future conservation practitioners and monitoring and evaluating conservation science which underpins all Durrell activities.
• Jersey Zoo: a centre of excellence in animal husbandry, research, training and education
The Caribbean Programme Manager will lead the implementation and management of Durrell field project activities in the Eastern Caribbean, with a particular focus on Saint Lucia. S/he will act as Durrell’s main focal point within the Eastern Caribbean and will build and maintain partnerships with national and regional organisations.
The Programme Manager will support the development of Durrell’s strategy, with a focus on the development of our Rewilding plans in Saint Lucia and also partnership projects in the broader region, including supporting the mountain chicken recovery efforts in Montserrat.
Support the development and delivery of Durrell’s field programme in the Eastern Caribbean;
o Lead local development of Durrell’s rewilding plan for Saint Lucia;
o Represent Durrell to partner institutions within the Eastern Caribbean;
o Support the development of the mainland island concept within Saint Lucia;
o Manage and lead species conservation projects in Saint Lucia and other Eastern Caribbean islands;
o Support the development of funding proposals with Durrell’s fundraisers.
Support the operational and technical delivery of Durrell’s species conservation activities within the region;
o Lead Durrell’s engagement in the development of a captive breeding programme for the Saint Lucia racer;
o Support direct conservation efforts for the management and protection of white-breasted thrashers as a flagship for dry forest conservation;
o Provide technical guidance to local partners on monitoring and management options for the Saint Lucia iguana.
Support local and regional partners to improve capacity for conservation;
o Provide guidance to the Saint Lucia Forestry Department and Saint Lucia National Trust on monitoring and management actions on the ground;
o Work with Durrell Knowledge team to support capacity development initiatives and engagement with Durrell’s training programmes within the region (including the DESMAN training course);
o Collaborate with the Department of Sustainable Development in the Iyalona Conservation of The Northeast Coast Project and the South East Costal Project under GEF 6.
Support the administration of Durrell activities in region;
o Ensure the effective management of project finances within Saint Lucia;
o Ensure effective management and maintenance of Durrell project vehicle;
o Act as a focal person for Durrell staff travelling to or engaging in the region.
