Position: Bycatch Coordinator
Duty Station: Cambridge, United Kingdom (or other feasible location, subject to discussion at interview)
Hours: Full time: 37.5 hours per week exclusive of meal breaks.
Duration: Until September 30th 2018. Extension until IWC68 in 2020 subject to Commission endorsement and available funding.
Reporting to: Head of Programme Development
The IWC was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which was signed in Washington DC on 2nd December 1946. The preamble to the Convention states that its purpose is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the orderly development of the whaling industry. The Commission also co-ordinates and, in several cases, funds conservation work on many species of cetacean.
This position is suitable for a dynamic and experienced individual who can lead the strategic development IWC bycatch mitigation initiative, which seeks to help governments to address issues relating to cetacean bycatch and in particular its mitigation; and who can commence delivery of its programme of work.
· Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in a politically sensitive environment.
· Demonstrable professional experience in a relevant field and in the strategic development and management of new programmes of work.
· Knowledge of bycatch mitigation measures and an awareness of relevant legislation
· Fluency in English.
This post is advertised on a fixed term basis until the end of September 2018, with extension for a further two years subject to approval by the Commission at its 67th meeting in September 2018. It is therefore intended to appoint an applicant capable of delivering the initiative over this longer time period. A secondment arrangement could also be considered for the successful candidate.
