Do join us for the 9th Annual CCF Conservation Working Party on Sunday 25th November in Hayley Wood, Cambridgeshire

Everyone is welcome. We’ll be carrying out woodland management activities in this traditional English Ancient Woodland habitat. We’ll be undertaking a variety of tasks and there will be something for all abilities so even if you’ve never tried this kind of thing before, do come along.

The work will include cutting down small trees along the rides as part of the ancient woodland coppice management, tidying up scrub, moving branches, making up bundles of hedging materials, and of course burning some of the wood so we can have an end of the day feast.

We’ll meet at 9.55am in Cambridge and be working on site from about 10.30am until about 4pm when we’ll have the option of a guided tour of the wood. After the tour we'll meet back at the bonfire for soup and baked potatoes and then be back in Cambridge around 6/6.30pm.

The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire Wildlife Trusts manage the wood and we will have their voluntary warden for the wood, Richard Dowsett with us on the day.

You can find out more about Hayley Wood by clicking on this link:http://www.wildlifebcn.org/reserves/hayley-wood

We'll be organising lifts from Cambridge so we hope some of you will be willing to take people and we will be collecting offers and requests for lifts when you book nearer the time on Eventbrite

Louise Bacon is kindly organising the food and tools as well as bringing her expertise in woodland management to organise the tasks for the day.

How to book a place

Please book your place via Eventbrite, places are free but booking required. If you have offered lifts, please come to UNEP-WCMC unless you hear otherwise.

Food and refreshments

CCF is providing food and drink at the end the day with a meal cooked in the embers of our bonfire. We’re planning a vegetarian (and optionally vegan) feast of soup followed by jacket potatoes, cheese, beans, fried onions all washed down with tea and coffee.

Do bring your own packed lunch and drink as we’ll take a break and eat lunch once we’ve started work on site.

Timings and transport

We will meet at 9.55am at the end of the lane next to UNEP-WCMC at 219C Huntingdon Road CB3 0DL for a 10.00am departure. We’re hoping to have enough people with cars to operate a car sharing system and if we have more cars than we need, we will leave some at UNEP-WCMC. If people would like to go directly to Hayley Wood then please let us know when you book.

We will return at about 6pm, although people can stay longer if they want to linger around the bonfire!

What to bring

We’ll be outside all day so you’ll need warm and waterproof clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or torn, many layers and thermals are best if you have them. We recommend you bring a hat and gardening/work gloves, although we will have a few spare gloves if people forget. It may be wet underfoot even if it’s not raining and the site can get very muddy so we recommend you wear wellies (rubber boots) or walking boots.

Also you'll need to bring a mug, plate, bowl, spoon, knife, fork, water bottle (we’ll bring a big water container for refills). If you like toasting Marshmallows on a fire, do bring some of those too. We are providing food at the end of the day, but you’ll need to bring along something easy to eat on site for lunch. We’ll be walking back to the cars in the dark so you might like to bring a torch.

There is a shelter relatively nearby to keep bags dry but it’s best not to bring valuables as there is no secure storage on site.
